Australia is a nation for whom interaction between its people and its environment has always been crucial, and will become even more so in the future. With its vast expanses of desert, its relative lack of fresh water in places where it is most needed, and the fragility of its soils, much care needs to be taken to ensure that our nation's environment is given the highest priority. We need our land use and agricultural practices to be genuinely sustainable and world's best practice in order to conserve our particularly scarce natural resources. As a nation, we also need to ensure that there is an appropriate balance between the needs of the environment and the needs of those people in the community which the environment ultimately serves. |
