At the turn of the twentieth century, Australia proudly occupied its position as the richest nation on Earth. Over the course of the twentieth century, however, Australia began to slip down this economic ladder and, by the 1980s, we were in the bottom half of the 'economic league'. Poor policies---which isolated Australia internationally, and which over-regulated individuals' rights to use their own labour---stifled competition and were chiefly responsible for creating our economic woes.

Thankfully, from the mid-1980s, governments of both persuasions began to correct these past mistakes and put Australia on a path towards the top of the income ladder---where it rightly belongs. But much work remains to be done. We need to fix our nation's antiquated industrial relations system, which is not only a cause of unnecessary unemployment, but also highly immoral in that it breaches individuals' human rights to make best use of their own labour as they see fit. Australia must also do more to reduce the ever-growing tax burden, which not only cripples economic activity, but also creates dire social consequences for families coming under intense financial stress. Some level of taxation will always be needed for the common good, but the current tax take is far greater than necessary for this purpose.
